Piña Colada official drink of Puerto Rico

Introducing the piñacolada, the official drink of Puerto Rico! Get ready to embark on a delightful tropical adventure with this sensational cocktail that captures the essence of paradise. Created in the 1950s on the beautiful island itself, the piñacolada is a true icon that will transport your taste buds to sun-drenched shores and swaying palm trees.

At Aqua Bar and Grill, nestled in the Palo Seco sector of Toa Baja, we have perfected the art of crafting the perfect piña colada. Our mixologists infuse it with our Aqua color touch, adding a unique flair bound to leave you craving more. From the moment you take your first sip, you’ll be captivated by the harmonious blend of rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice, perfectly balanced to create a heavenly concoction.

The origins of the piña colada may be shrouded in mystery, but two fascinating stories vie for the title of its birth. One account credits Ramón “Monchito” Marrero, a talented bartender at the prestigious Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, with the creation of this tantalizing drink. Tasked with crafting a signature cocktail that embodied the tropical flavors of Puerto Rico, Monchito experimented tirelessly until he struck gold with the Piña Colada. The rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice blend became an instant hit, symbolizing the allure of Puerto Rico’s tropical paradise.

On the other hand, Barrachina Restaurant, located in the heart of Old San Juan, claims its own stake in piña colada history. In 1963, during a spirited competition to discover a new drink using the revolutionary Coco López cream of coconut, bartender Ramón Portas Mingot mixed together rum, Coco López, and pineapple juice to create their take on the Piña Colada. The drink’s tremendous success propelled Barrachina into the spotlight, making it a revered destination for enthusiasts seeking an authentic taste of this beloved cocktail.

While the origins may be debated, one thing is certain: the piña colada has become integral to Puerto Rico’s identity. In fact, it was declared the official drink of Puerto Rico in 1978, solidifying its status as a cherished symbol of the island’s spirit. Today, you can enjoy this refreshing and tropical delight in Puerto Rico and in bars, restaurants, and beach resorts worldwide.
